The Paradise Circus 2015

Over 5,000 people knelt down to experience the installation.

The Paradise Circus, Los Angeles 2015 was exhibited at the Los Angeles Convention Center during the LA Art Show 2015. This interactive installation was one part confession booth, one part cathedral steeple and looked like a circus tent. Art on the exterior mimicked old time circus posters announcing incredible, religious-themed circus acts. Viewers were invited to enter the booth, kneel down and pull on the braided cord to reveal ‘Paradise 2015.’  The image, which was loosely based on Hiernymous Bosch’ Garden of Earthly Delights, was only completely viewable from a kneeling position. A unique audio track created by Motion Worker titled Angus Dei Tuvan Bali Calliope played continuously in the background.

The Circus was assembled and finished in our studio in South Pasadena, then transported to downtown LA for final installation at the convention center. Materials included sheet metal, construction lumber, mechanical rigging, lighting and audio systems, fabric curtains, vintage church kneeler, printed canvas banners, printed wall paper and a cast-plaster golden winged pig.

An estimated 30,000 visitors attended the LA Art Show, and about 5,000 people knelt in the confessional to view Paradise. Thanks to art critic Shana Nys Dambrot for hosting a talk with me during the fair.

Fabulosus Fabularis

An installation for the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair 2016

Fabulosus Fabularis (Google Latin – “Legendary Mythology”) is an 18’ tall monument to the power of mythology. Its incomprehensible letters and mysterious symbols surround apparent tales of heroism and drama, canon law and ancient wisdom, good and evil, dominance and submission. It describes powerful empires and great religions from a make-believe world.

Inspired by Byzantine icons, Persian miniatures and epic poems, Fabulosus Fabularis invokes the power of Imperial Rome and the wonder of the Hagia Sophia. The indecipherable words and images displayed on this imposing monument suggest volumes about our notions of heroes, saints, kings and mythical beings.

A construction of “inventive mythology”, Fabulosus Fabularis presents gilded yarn as ancient pedigree and wraps it in a cloak of authority. Its icons, filigree and embellishments become symbols of social order. Fabulosus Fabularis assumes authority and dares you to challenge it.

Installation materials for this project include a cardboard construction tube, CNC-milled plywood wood, rolled aluminum, fiberglass-reinforced castings, paint  and custom-printed wallpaper. The work was created at the artist’s studio in South Pasadena, CA for the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair 2016.

After the exhibition in Palm Springs, I crafted together a single image in a totem composition and made it available as a print.
